'The Killing' Recap - I'll Let You Know When I Get There
Or maybe his seeming innocence is just another red herring in a season full of stinky fish. This show has my head spinning.
Let's get to it, shall we? With only three episodes left, last night was mostly about reminding us who's still on the suspect list. Let's run 'em down from least to most likely, shall we?
Mitch and Stan: Rosie's parents probably didn't kill their daughter, even if Mitch did almost inadvertently let her sons die from CO poisoning. Oh, and Stan did almost murder Red Herring #I-Lost-Count, Bennet. But Stan did turn himself in, so that proves he really is a good guy, deep down.
Bennet: He's not a murderer! He's a kidnapper with a heart of gold. Yes, it turns out that Bennet and his friend Mohammed really did have absolutely nothing to do with Rosie's murder. They were just protecting a 12-year-old girl from female circumcision. A 12-year-old girl who just happened to have the same exact Grand Canyon T-shirt as Rosie. Coincidental.
Belko: As much as it pains me to say it, it appears crazy Uncle Belko is just a lonely weirdo who's standing in front of a family asking it to love him.
Mother Belko (Bev Royce): Belko's mom is Joan Crawford crazy. Or maybe Bette Davis crazy. She reminds me a lot of Baby Jane. Wild theory: Maybe Bev was jealous of how much Belko loved the Larsens and she took it out on Rosie? Probably not, but we have to examine all the angles (See: My Sarah Linden-As-Killer theory).
Holder: I don't really think he's the killer, he's just done a lot to sabotage the case (i.e. setting up illegal wiretaps). He's probably just incompetent, I mean he doesn't even know that bacon doughnuts are not vegetarian.
Linden: I like my M. Night Shamalamalam theory where Linden has multiple personalities that murder people around the Seattle area just so Linden has more crimes to solve, thus keeping her away from Sonoma and her creepy fiance, Rick. The personalities are just trying to help her, you see?
Jamie: He's too outwardly slimy to be the murderer.
Jack: Little Linden is a naughty little boy, what with his drinking and smoking and calling his selfless caretaker a "lesbo." Is he murderously bad? Probably not.
Rick: I still think Rick has something to do with all this. Why else does he keep flying back and forth between Sonoma and Seattle? Or has he ever actually gone down to Sonoma? If he had really been down there, then that means he's flown back and forth between the two places no fewer than three times in ten days. WTF, Rick?
Richmond: He's starting to lose it, listening to music that reminds him of his dead wife and obsessing over a basketball. Did he murder Rosie? I don't think so. That would be too easy. Or would it be? His fingerprints have been over this thing since the beginning, but he's never really been a suspect, has he? You're looking more and more murderous, Darren.
Gwen: She did not like the looks of Rosie shaking hands with Richmond at a campaign thingy. Maybe she was wary of being replaced by younger, fresher, less back-stabbyier Rosie. And that sinister look at the end of the episode -- Murdery!
Rich Guy Basketball Condo Man: He's just the kind of megalomaniac who would have no problem with murder. But why would he murder Rosie? For the hell of it? I'd believe it, but it would be kind of lame. Rich Guy as the murderer would be just the kind of twist The Killing would like to throw at us, though, methinks.
Auntie Terri: I'm pretty sure she done did it at this point. She was way too insistent that Belko is a crazy nut. She's always around the Larsen house and she seems to resent it. Oh, and there was that time she acted all randomly crazy around Jasper's dad that the show hasn't addressed yet. It will all come out in due time. And she's been hanging around her sister's house since Rosie went missing. Creepy murderous auntie.
We only have a few episodes left. To suddenly drag someone else back out of the woodwork whom we haven't seen in a few episodes (e.g. Jasper, his dad, the mayor, Gwen's dad who was so evil in Lost) would feel cheap, so I think the folks listed above are our main suspects. Who do you think did it? Whom did Rosie know well enough that she would take and Adela boat to the Wapi Eagle Casino in the middle of the night to meet that person? How awkward was that sentence?

Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, a member of the two-time Grammy winning, multiplatinum band Linkin Park, shares his impressions following his trip to Haiti with Music for Relief and the United Nations Foundation. Phoenix traveled to Haiti to see firsthand how the United Nations is helping Haiti rebuild, fifteen months after a major earthquake killed hundreds of thousands and destroyed much of the nation’s infrastructure.
Along with other participating artists, Phoenix is encouraging fans to Download to Donate (or text “RELIEF” to 41010) and make a $10 donation as part of non-profit organization Music for Relief’s work to support the recovery. In return, supporters gain access to a digital album featuring unreleased tracks by a growing number of artists, including Alanis Morissette, Glitch Mob, Crystal Method, Slash, and the original song by Linkin Park, Not Alone. Since it’s inauguration in 2005, the charity has raised more than $4 million for victims of natural disasters around the world, including Hurricane Katrina, monsoon flooding in Pakistan, and the tsunami in Japan. Since the earthquake, Download to Donate for Haiti has raised more than $270,000 supporting the work of five organizations in Haiti including the UN Foundation.

Movie Review - Thor (***)
Of all of Marvel's A-list superheroes, Thor is probably the trickiest one to build a movie around. Given the vast mythology, ornate costumes, and awkward plot elements involving things called Asgard, Frost Giants, and "Odinsleep," the difficulty level to pull this one off is quite high. One false step and the project devolves into silliness and high camp.
This big-budget adaptation of the Thor comics is still silly and campy - I don't think there's any way around it really - but Marvel has a secret weapon to counteract those elements. An ace up the movie's sleeve, if you will. And his name is Kenneth Branagh. When I first heard Branagh was directing this, I thought it was an odd choice. Branagh is best known for his Shakespeare adaptations, like Much Ado About Nothing and Henry V. He's never really worked on this kind of scale before. But as it turns out, he was the perfect choice.
Branagh juggles the varying tonal shifts with ease and keeps the movie bouncy and entertaining. He handles all the effects work with aplomb, and treats the property with respect, even though the movie's tongue is consistently planted firmly in its cheek. Nothing is ever taken too seriously. Thor honors its main character, but also has a good deal of fun at his expense. Unpretentious audiences should find something to enjoy here.
The script has a soggy, fish-out-of-water middle section, after Thor (Star Trek's Chris Hemsworth) is cast down to Earth and stripped of his powers. It's in this section of the film that Thor is befriended by a team of scientists working in New Mexico, led by Stellan Skarsgard and Natalie Portman. They help break him of his egotistical and prideful personality quirks so he can reclaim his mighty hammer and stop his evil brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from ruling the galaxy and killing a lot of innocent humans.
Hemsworth has a nice, easygoing presence, and is hugely likeable in the lead role. He nails the physical action and the comedy required of the character. Hiddleston gives the best performance in the film, and makes for a compelling villain. That's a good thing because the end credits of Thor suggest that Loki will be the big baddie in next year's The Avengers. Portman, beautiful as always, isn't given much to do as the love interest. I wonder if she'll even be back for a sequel.
I wish the movie had more memorable action sequences, and wasn't so silly at times, but maybe that's just an issue of trying to compare this to some of the more weightier superhero films like The Dark Knight. Thor is not that dark or deep. It may not be a great film, but it is an above-average comic book flick and makes for a decent first chapter in the inevitable Thor franchise. Mission accomplished Marvel and Mr. Branagh. I want to see more Thor movies, and I continue to get more and more excited about The Avengers.

Rings Under 50 ? Enamel Flowers to Wear This Spring
When I think about my favorite sort of flower rings, enamel jumps out as the leading contender. There’s something about the vibrancy of the colors with enamel, I guess. I know they won’t break easily, but they also don’t have to be super expensive. To prove my point, I’ve found five enamel flower rings under $50.00. The first and last ring selections in the bunch are dome rings, which have a great graphic appeal to them. I also want to point out the fourth selection, by Nine West, which has an adjustable ring band. I have a hard time deciding which is my favorite here, but for my personal preferences the first ring� and the fifth ring are really calling to me. I like the gold graphics, and the dome shapes. The colors on the first ring choice remind me a bit of a couch pattern my Grandparent’s had, and the fifth ring choice reminds me of the colors of this dress my Mom had sewn in the 70′s. Chuck D Creates Limited 'By the Time I Got to Arizona' Canvases

In conjunction with the creative team SceneFour, the rapper-activist created an art piece that was inspired by Public Enemy's song 'By the Time I Get to Arizona' and the immigration policies of the state.
Chuck's painting is titled after the Public Enemy track, and according to a video that details the creation of the project, took about six months to create. Limited to only 300 pieces, each canvas measures about five feet by three feet and is numbered and signed by Chuck D. The imagery in the piece -- described as a "visual mash-up" -- draws attention to Arizona legislation that is often taken as hostile to immigrants and akin to racial profiling.

The lives of vintage items before they reach you
? Day 142 of Vintage 365 ?
The second half of May might seem like a rather odd time to suddenly wax poetically about the smell of a wood fire, but that's precisely what I'm in the mood to do this crisp, buttercup sunshine kissed morning.
You see, a few days ago a small parcel containing vintage recipe booklets (aka, cookery pamphlets) I'd ordered online arrived and the moment I tore open the bubble envelope, I was greeted with the unmistakably sweet, soothing, instantly recognizable scent of a wood fireplace (I'd even go so far as to say that the scent was distinctly that of hickory wood, but as I don't profess to be an absolute expert on smoky odours, I'll simply call it a robustly scented wood smoke).
The items themselves are in wonderful condition, especially given their very fragile nature and age. I like to close my eyes and picture that they've been stored loving for the past several decades in a country farm kitchen, on a shelf near an old wood burning cast iron bot belly stove, taken down every now and then when their owner needed a time-honoured dish for a church potluck, baby shower, or anniversary supper.
I see her as being a charmingly sweet women in her 70s or 80s, soft white curls framing her sweet-as-a-baby-doll round face, a beloved, well worn apron covering her handmade dress, named something sublimely grandmotherly like Mae or Elsie.
{I can't help but imagine that it was a deeply beautiful vintage wood burning cook stove like this splendid example, which comes by way of 7thswan on Flickr, that produced the tell-tale scent my "new" cookbooks are imbued with.}
In Elsie's house that same scent of good old fashioned wood smoke had permeated everything, from the patchwork quilt on her four post bed to the lace curtains she'd hung up on the sitting room windows back in 1952.
It would be stronger - more heady - in the winter, but always there, even on the toastiest of August afternoons, when the stove was turned off, diner coming instead from the incomparably fresh vegetables she'd picked from her verdant garden earlier in the afternoon, her beloved collie Annabelle trailing her around the rows of butter lettuce, plump radishes, and ready-to-tumble-from-the-vine heirloom tomatoes.
Of course, I'll never know the true back story of these simple, wonderfully charming recipe booklets, nor where - or when - they picked up the delightful wood smoke perfume they came packaged with. In collecting and buying vintage and antique items we so often are in the dark when it comes to the lives these pieces have owned before they became our own.
I don't create quaint little tales for every yesteryear item I get the joy of adding to my collection, but any time one arrives with a distinct (pleasant!) scent, I can't help but let my mind spin creative stories of the people, places and years that that something I now call my own were an important part of.
