Miranda Kerr has thrown her weight behind a helpline aimed at fighting youth suicide in her native Australia.
“The sadness of losing someone, especially in these circumstances, is something we live with and we continually question how it could be prevented,” said the supermodel, who lost a cousin to suicide. “There’s not really a great awareness about the services available to kids and that’s why I’m behind this great cause.”
According to the organization behind the helpline, “Kids Helpline is a free, 24 hour counseling service for young people aged 5-25 years in Australia. Counseling is offered by phone, email and over the web. Counselors respond to more than 6,000 calls each week about issues ranging from relationship breakdowns and bullying, to sexual abuse, homelessness, suicidal thoughts, and drug and alcohol use.”
“If we can reach just one child and let them know there is someone out there who wants to listen, that could help to save their life,” adds Kerr. “I believe if my cousin had known of Kids Helpline it may have saved his life.”
